Term 6 - Class 6

Welcome back to term 6!

Wow – what a year it’s been!
We’ve been incredibly impressed by the class’s perseverance and focus during SATs – they truly gave it their all, and we couldn’t be prouder of their effort and resilience.

As we approach the end of the school year, Term 6 promises to be a busy and exciting one!

This term, our learning will centre around Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo – a story about an extraordinary journey. Inspired by this, we’ll explore themes of transition and adventure, linking them to our own journey as the children prepare to move on to secondary school.

In English, the book will serve as a stimulus for a variety of writing tasks, including play scripts linked to our end-of-year performance, The Wizard of Oz. We will continue to develop our writing portfolios, showcasing our skills and individual writing styles. We will also reflect on our time at St Mary’s by creating a guide for new starters, leaving a legacy for future pupils.

In Maths, we'll be revisiting key mathematical skills and concepts to consolidate understanding and ensure a confident transition to secondary-level maths. Pupils will also take part in engaging investigations and challenges to deepen their problem-solving abilities.

Our science topic this term is Living Things and Their Habitats. We’ll explore microorganisms and learn how all living things are classified – a fascinating way to wrap up our scientific studies this year.

In RE, we’ll be learning about Humanism and exploring the question: "How do inspirational people impact how Humanists live today?" This unit will encourage pupils to consider different belief systems and their influence on individuals and society.

Geography lessons will focus on developing map skills and learning about Japan – a country featured in Kensuke’s Kingdom. We’ll also study natural disasters and examine how geography can influence these events.

Our PSHE unit is Changing Me, where we’ll discuss growing up, changes in our bodies, and relationships. This is a statutory and important part of the curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

In Art, we’ll study the work of Japanese artist Hokusai and explore the technique of printmaking to create our own inspired pieces.

In PE, we will be focusing on athletics every Thursday in preparation for Sports Day. Pupils will develop key skills such as running, jumping, throwing through a range of athletic activities. Please ensure pupils come to school in their PE kits on Thursdays throughout this term.

In French, through our Me in the World topic, we will explore French-speaking countries around the world, discovering their flags, currencies, traditions and celebrations, while revisiting and applying the language skills we have developed throughout the year.
